Can a complete beginner take the RYA PWC course?
Yes. No previous personal watercraft experience is required.

How old do you need to be to take the RYA PWC course?
The RYA minimum age for the Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course is 12 years old.
Riders between 12 and 16 must use personal watercraft under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Parents should also remember that individual harbour authorities, operators, insurers and overseas destinations can impose their own restrictions in addition to RYA course requirements.
Do you need a licence to ride a jet ski in the UK?
There is no single nationwide “jet ski driving licence” that every recreational PWC rider must hold simply to use a personal watercraft everywhere in UK waters.
National rules
Powered watercraft are subject to UK maritime safety law, including provisions concerning dangerous use. PWC riders are not outside normal responsibilities simply because the craft is small.

Does the RYA PWC course give you an ICC?
Completing the PWC Proficiency Course does not mean the course certificate itself should simply be treated as an ICC.
However, the RYA PWC Proficiency Course Completion Certificate is accepted by the RYA as evidence of competence for the Personal Watercraft category when applying for an International Certificate of Competence, subject to the RYA’s eligibility and application requirements.
If you intend to hire or use a PWC overseas, check the requirements of the country, harbour and operator before travelling.
Do not assume that the same documents are accepted everywhere. Rules vary between countries and sometimes between individual operators.
