RYA Yachtmaster Motor Prep Course
The RYA Yachtmaster Motor prep is a 5 day course carried out at our base at Costa Blanca Sailing in Alicante. It is designed to hone your skills in boat handling so that you are at a standard at which you can attempt the exam.
At the end of the 5 days, you will be required to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to an RYA examiner. This is an independent examiner appointed by the RYA and only the highest standards will be accepted.
There are two options for the Yachtmaster exam. You can either attempt the Yachtmaster Offshore exam or the lesser but just as respected Yachtmaster Coastal exam. The eligability requirements for the two exams differ slightly as follows:
Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Requirements:
Minimum sea time of 50 days aboard and a logged distance of 2500 miles. The mileage must include at least 5 passages over 60 miles long and you must have been skipper for two of these passages. Two of these passages must have been overnight passages.
You must have skippered a yacht for at least 5 days out of the total sea time.
Half of the qualifying mileage and passages must have been in tidal waters although the exam can be in non tidal waters.
Qualifying mileage must have been attained in the last 10 years.
Yachtmaster Coastal Exam Requirements:
Minimum sea time of 30 days aboard and a logged distance of 800 miles. The mileage must include at least 12 night hours and you must have been skipper for at least two days.
Like the Offshore prerequisites, half the mileage must have been in tidal waters but the exam can be taken in non tidal waters. All qualifying sea time must have been attained in the last 10 years.
Candidates for both the Offshore and Coastal exams need to hold a GMDSS Short Range VHF certificate and a valid first aid certificate. There is an exam fee of £220 for Offshore and £189 for Coastal payable to the RYA examiner.
