RYA Yachtmaster Sail Prep and Exam

RYA Yachtmaster Abroad

RYA Yachtmaster Sail Prep Course £775

The RYA Yachtmaster Sail Prep course is a 5 day course. During this course you will work closely with your instructor and try and perfect your skills so that you can attempt the RYA Yachtmaster exam.

All our Yachtmaster prep weeks and exams are conducted in the non tidal waters of Alicante in the Mediterranean whereas theory courses are conducted at our base in Poole.

The exam is conducted by an independent RYA examiner. The examiner is appointed by the RYA and only candidates that are ready will be able to pass this test.

There are two options for the exam. You can either attempt Yachtmaster Offshore or the Yachtmaster Coastal exams. The coastal option is easier and both of the exams have slightly different prerequisites.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Prerequisites

Candidates for the RYA Offshore exams will need to have 50 days of logged sea time and a minimum of 2500 miles. This qualifying mileage must include 5 passages of 60 miles or more. Candidates must have been the skipper in charge for at least two of the 60 miles passages. Two of the passages must have been overnight trips.

Candidates must have been the skipper in charge for at least 5 days out of the total sea time.

Half of the qualifying mileage and passages must have been in tidal waters although the exam can be in non tidal waters.

Qualifying mileage must have been attained in the last 10 years.

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Prerequisites

For the coastal exam the requirements are less. Candidates are required to have logged 800 sea miles with a total of 30 days aboard. During that time there must have been at least 12 night hours. Candidates must have been the skipper in charge for at least 2 days.

Half of the qualifying mileage and passages must have been in tidal waters although the exam can be in non tidal waters.

Qualifying mileage must have been attained in the last 10 years.

Candidates for both the Offshore and Coastal exams need to hold a GMDSS Short Range VHF certificate and a valid first aid certificate. There is an exam fee of £220 for Offshore and £189 for Coastal payable to the RYA
