Get Your Powerboat Confidence Back
If it’s been a while since you last drove a powerboat, a focused day with an instructor can bring the skills back surprisingly quickly.
Practise the manoeuvres that matter, rebuild your confidence and go boating again without feeling rusty.
You haven’t forgotten how to drive a boat. You’re just out of practice.
Perhaps you completed Powerboat Level 2 a year or two ago. Perhaps you only drive boats on holiday. Or perhaps you’ve recently bought or chartered a boat and realised you don’t feel quite as confident around a marina as you once did.
That’s exactly what the Powerboat Skills Refresher is for.
Rather than repeating an entire PB2 course, you spend a practical day concentrating on the skills that tend to become rusty when they aren’t used regularly.
The aim is simple: by the end of the day, the boat should feel familiar again.
The refresher works particularly well for four types of boater.
It’s been a while since PB2
You passed your course, but haven’t had enough opportunities to keep practising and want to rebuild confidence before boating independently again.
You’re about to charter abroad
You have a holiday coming up and would rather rediscover your marina skills in Poole than in front of your family at an unfamiliar Mediterranean harbour.
You’ve bought a boat
You know the fundamentals but want some concentrated practice before taking responsibility for your own boat and crew.
You simply want more practice
You may be technically competent but want another day of instructor-led manoeuvring to make everything smoother, calmer and more instinctive.
Spend the day working on the things that actually make you nervous.
This is deliberately a practical course. Your instructor will refresh the core skills and can spend additional time on the areas where you feel least confident.
- Coming alongside a pontoon
- Leaving a berth
- Turns in confined spaces
- Slow-speed control
- Using wind and tide
- Picking up a mooring buoy
- Man overboard recovery
- Use of lines and springs
- Approach planning
- Anything specific you want to revisit

Most people aren’t nervous at 20 knots. They’re nervous at 2 knots.
Open-water driving is rarely what worries returning powerboaters. It’s usually the final few metres into a berth.
That’s where wind, tide, confined space, other boats and an audience on the pontoon all seem to arrive at the same time.
The refresher gives you time to slow everything down, repeat the manoeuvre and understand what the boat is doing without the pressure of getting it right first time.
There is no prize for doing it quickly.
Good marina handling is usually calm, planned and uneventful. The aim is not to look impressive. It’s to stay in control.

Much better to make your mistakes here than on the first day of your holiday.
If you’re planning to hire a powerboat abroad, refreshing your skills before you leave can make the whole trip more enjoyable.
Instead of spending the first morning remembering how to judge momentum, approach a berth or use a spring, you arrive with the important skills already back in your hands.
That is particularly useful when the charter boat, marina, language and local conditions are all unfamiliar.
Maximum three students per boat.
A refresher only works if you actually get enough time behind the wheel.
We therefore keep the maximum student ratio at three people to one boat. That gives everyone meaningful time to repeat manoeuvres and allows the instructor to focus on individual weaknesses rather than running through a fixed demonstration.
Do you need to repeat Powerboat Level 2?
Choose the refresher if…
You already have PB2 or equivalent experience and basically understand the skills, but you feel rusty and want concentrated practical revision.
Choose PB2 if…
You have little or no structured powerboat training, need the certificate itself or feel that you need to rebuild your knowledge from the beginning rather than simply refresh it.
View RYA Powerboat Level 2 →The best thing you can do afterwards is keep boating.
Refresher training brings your skills back. Regular use is what keeps them there.
Build real passage experience
If you’re ready to move beyond marina manoeuvres and practise using your skills on real journeys, our post-PB2 experience course may be the better next step.
What Next After PB2 →Keep boating regularly
If access to a boat is the problem, Powerboat Club offers another route to using your skills without immediately buying a boat of your own.

Do I need a Powerboat Level 2 certificate?
The course is primarily intended for people who have previously completed PB2 or already have a reasonable foundation of powerboat handling experience. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll help you decide whether the refresher or a full PB2 course is more suitable.
How long is the refresher course?
The minimum duration is one practical training day.
How many students are on the boat?
We keep the maximum ratio to three students per boat so that everyone gets meaningful practical driving time.
Can I ask to practise something specific?
Yes. The day covers the core skills that commonly become rusty, but your instructor will do their best to spend additional time on areas you specifically want to revisit.
Is this useful before hiring a boat abroad?
Yes. It is particularly useful if you hold the relevant qualification but have not driven a boat recently and want your manoeuvring skills to feel familiar again before your trip.
Does the refresher issue a new PB2 certificate?
No. This is practical refresher training rather than a repeat RYA Powerboat Level 2 certification course.
One practical day can make an enormous difference.
Brush away the cobwebs, practise the manoeuvres that worry you and get back to enjoying boating rather than thinking about everything that might go wrong.
